Making science accessible, practical & empowering.
Helpful Scientist was created to help everyday people, schools, workplaces, laboratories and communities better understand and apply science in meaningful ways.
Our Story
Founded to bridge the gap between science and everyday life
Helpful Scientist was established in January 2022 with the clear purpose to make science easier to understand, easier to access and easier to use in real life.
For many people, scientific information can feel overwhelming, technical or out of reach. Questions related to health, wellness, education, workplace wellbeing, laboratory support or community development, often need trusted guidance that explains the science clearly and practically.
Helpful Scientist was created to bridge that gap.
Through education, consulting, workshops, wellness guidance, technical training and community programmes, Helpful Scientist helps people understand the “why” behind important scientific and health-related topics, so they can make more informed choices and apply knowledge with confidence.
Why helpful scientist exists
science should not be intimidating, it should be useful.
Helpful Scientist exists because science has the power to improve lives, strengthen communities, support healthier workplaces, inspire learners and solve practical problems.
We translate complex scientific ideas into clear, practical and accessible information. We help people connect knowledge to real-life situations, we provide information if they are trying to improve their wellbeing, educate a team, guide learners, train laboratory staff, build a wellness programme or create positive community impact.
Our work is built on the belief that when people understand science, they are better equipped to ask questions, make decisions and take meaningful action.
Meet our Founder
Kerusha Pillay
Kerusha Pillay is a South African Scientist, Educator, Laboratory Specialist and Scientific Consultant with more than 20 years of experience in molecular diagnostics, biotechnology, scientific training, public health support and science education.
Her career has been shaped by a strong belief that science should serve people. This belief sits at the heart of Helpful Scientist and influences every service, workshop, consultation and community programme the organisation provides.
Kerusha combines technical scientific expertise with a warm, people-centred approach. She is passionate about helping people understand science in a way that feels practical, empowering and relevant to their everyday lives.
Her work spans multiple areas, including molecular diagnostics, PCR and qPCR technologies, laboratory management, scientific training, biotechnology, public health support, wellness education, science communication and community engagement.
This broad experience allows Helpful Scientist to support a wide range of clients, from individuals and families to schools, corporate teams, laboratories, research organisations, NGOs and communities.
Our scientific background
A foundation built on science, research and real-world experience.
Kerusha’s scientific career includes pioneering research on the endangered Cape Parrot, South Africa’s only endemic parrot.
During her Master’s studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Kerusha conducted important research that contributed to wildlife conservation and forensic genetics in South Africa. Her work included developing novel microsatellite DNA libraries for Cape Parrots, creating genetic tools for parentage and relatedness studies, and supporting forensic conservation efforts aimed at combating the illegal wildlife trade.
Her research formed part of an international collaboration between the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of Sheffield through the Darwin Initiative, contributing to the advancement of conservation genetics in South Africa and supporting the foundations for ongoing Cape Parrot conservation and research programmes.
This early work reflects the same values that continue through Helpful Scientist today: curiosity, evidence, education, impact and the belief that science can be used to protect, support and improve life
Scientific expertise with a human touch.
Helpful Scientist combines scientific knowledge with a people-first approach.
We understand that people come to science with different backgrounds, questions and levels of confidence. Some want to understand their health better. Some need support for their teams. Some want to inspire learners. Some need highly technical laboratory guidance. Others are looking for community-focused programmes that create meaningful change.
We explain complex ideas clearly, avoid unnecessary jargon and focus on practical knowledge that can be understood and applied. Rather than simply providing information, we help people make sense of that information in a way that supports better decisions, stronger learning and real-world impact.

Scientific expertise with a human approach.
Helpful Scientist combines deep scientific knowledge with a people-centred way of working. We translate complex science into practical, understandable information that helps people feel more informed, supported and empowered.
This is not science for the sake of science. It is science that helps people make sense of their health, improve their wellbeing, educate their teams, inspire learners, strengthen laboratories and support communities.
